The Arm of Flesh

O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever, I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm. (2 Nephi 4:34)

-That covenant, made by Nephi, is a covenant that all those who are sincere seekers after the mind and will of the Lord should make. Other like scriptures read:

Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:5)

The weak things of the world shall come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones, that man should not counsel his fellow man, neither trust in the arm of flesh — (D&C 1:19)

Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide.... (Micah 7:5)

I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. (2 Nephi 4:34)

The scriptures seem to be pretty explicit in regards to the outcome if we put our trust in the arm of flesh. George Q. Cannon stated:

If we, in our experience, have not yet proved the truth of the words of the prophet — “Cursed is he that trusteth in man, or maketh flesh his arm” [2 Nephi 28:31] — probably we will do if we live long enough. There is a curse attending every man and woman who does this. If we will watch the operations of the gospel of Jesus Christ among us, we will see that it has a tendency to develop knowledge in the bosoms of all, and it is the design of Providence that it should be so. We must all learn to depend upon God and upon him alone. Why, the very man upon whom we think we can rely with unbounded confidence, and trust with all we possess, may disappoint us sometimes, but trust in God and He never fails. We can go before Him at all times, and upon all occasions, and pour out our souls and desires before Him, and we feel that we lean upon a rock that will not fail, and upon a friend that will not desert us in the day of trial. He is omnipotent, and in Him only can we trust under all circumstances, therefore we perceive why the prophet has said — “Cursed is he that trusteth in man, or maketh flesh his arm.” (JD 12:45-46)

It has been the continuing effort of the Title of Liberty to draw this particular fact to the attention of its readers. To trust in Him and Him only. Although we are in the unique position of pointing to certain signs for the edification of our readers, we have emphasized and reemphasized the need for all to go directly to the source of all truth and find out personally for his or her self, not even putting total trust in us, the compilers of this publication. We will have only accomplished anything if you, the reader, have gained a desire to seek out the truth from its only Author. A bit of a different perspective from those that hail “trust us, we will not lead you astray.” The indication is that any and all men will at some time disappoint and fail. It was, once again, George Q. Cannon that said:

Do not, brethren, put your trust in man though he be a bishop, and apostle or a president, if you do so, they will fail you at some time or place... (Millennial Star 53:674)

That leaders in the Church have failed its members and the Lord is without doubt. Heber J. Kimball, one of the Lord’s true prophets, made it very clear:

You might as well deny Mormonism and turn away from it as to oppose the plurality of wives. Let the president of this Church, and the twelve apostles, and all the authorities unite and say with one voice that they will oppose that doctrine, and the whole of them would be damned. (JD 5:203)

And so they did, and so they were. That arm of flesh, even the presiding leaders of the Church led many astray from the road to exaltation. That many who followed came to persecute those who still chose to live the New and Everlasting Covenant and thus became even greater enemies of righteousness than had those of the government before. Thus a sure concession to the secret combinations was made which essentially ended the most important principle to Kingdom and power of God.
Yet it was in 1923 that an even greater joining of hands with that conspiracy occurred. Evidence was brought forth showing that President Grant and his associates, in order to finance their business ventures mortgaged the Salt Lake Temple, Church Office Building, Bishop’s Building, Deseret Gymnasium Building, the Beehive House and the Lion House. This was all documented in a pamphlet entitled, “Temple Block Sold” and of the mortgage holders was one Chase National Bank, seemingly at the top of the heap in the International Financiers conspiracy. One of the most startling pieces of evidence came forth as follows in exact reprint:

We later see the results of this type of philosophy of business venture as the Church in its buying and selling spree ended up with great stock holding in Coors Beer, while at the same time preaching the evils of alcohol, from the pulpit.
A later business dealing came as a result of a desire to divest itself of a pulp mill that had been purchased in war times to assure itself of sufficient paper to print through the shortages experienced nationwide. In an advantageous business arrangement with Times Publishing that provided Times with a pulp mill with no monetary outlay of funds and the Church with majority stock ownership in a publishing house with the opportunity of offsetting its own publishing needs for Church magazines. As a result, the Ensign was printed with greater efficiency, while on adjoining presses ran such literary treasures as Playboy and Penthouse, while at the same time preaching the evils of pornography, from the pulpit.
Many such examples can be cited, but it is not our desire to turn hearts against the Gospel of Jesus Christ, only to show that there is a definite difference between the “Church” and the Gospel, and that “men” will always fail, where the Lord is the only One that can never lead astray. Is it any wonder that Brigham Young would make statements such as:

There is nothing that would so soon weaken my hope and discourage me as to see this people in full fellowship with the word, and receive no more persecution from them because they are one with them. In such an event, we might bid farewell to the Holy Priesthood with all its blessings, privileges and aids to exaltations, principalities and powers in the eternities of the Gods. (JD 10:32)

When “Mormonism” finds favor with the wicked in this land, it will have gone into the shade; but until the power of the Priesthood is gone, “Mormonism” will never become popular with the wicked. (JD 4:38)

When we see the time that we can willingly strike hands and have full fellowship with those who despise the Kingdom of God, know ye then that the Priesthood of the Son of God is out of your possession. (JD 10:273)

And when the spirit of persecution, the spirit of hatred, of wrath, and malice ceases in the world against this people, it will be the time that this people have apostatized and joined hands with the wicked, and never until them; which I pray may never come. (JD 4:327)

Is there any doubt but that persecution in general has ceased against this people? Is there other evidence that some in leadership positions have in times past joined themselves to the very secret combinations that Moroni warned us of? Heber J. Grant said this as further evidence of those cited above:

I am thankful that wherever I have traveled during the past six months I have found a feeling of respect, a feeling of love in the hearts of many for the Latter-day Saints, in the hearts of those not of our faith. I heard many very splendid compliments while in Washington by members of the presidents cabinet, by senators and representatives, and by officials of the government in the Federal Reserve banking departments, and in others, wherever I went, and with all the people that I met, bankers in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and other cities, I heard good things said of the Latter-day Saints; we are coming to our own, so to speak. (General Conference, April 4, 1920, pg. 12)

This and many other examples is what brought him to say that the Church had finally “joined with the world.”
That the Federal Reserve, a private corporation not a government agency, the New York, Chicago and San Francisco bankers were and still are at the top of this secret combination that Moroni warned us about is without doubt. It should also be without doubt that these banking conspirators are even happier that the Latter-day Saints funnel their tithes and offerings, and now even missionary funds through their institutions, thus giving them the opportunity for more loans at unholy rates of usury, a practice abhorred by God as evidenced by His own words. All in an effort to make all people, the Latter-day Saints included, slaves to the financial whims of this Satanic secret combination. All these deceits have been done in secret, yet in an issue of the Church News a few years ago when much of this very thing was going on, it said of these very kinds of individuals or groups:

They are masters in “cover up,” yet they profess to teach a secret truth made known to them by some hidden process.... When will people learn that “the Lord worketh not in darkness” (2 Nephi 26:23) and that he gives no secret revelations and authorizes no secret ordinations? The Lord’s work is done openly and above board, with the vote and voice of the congregations of the Saints. (D&C 20:63-67) ... By their devious methods such teachers brand themselves for what they are. (June 21, 1975, Church News)

And so they do! One of these acts of secrecy occurred in 1990 when a banquet of honor was held at the Church office building for the internationalist, Armand Hammer. Hammer, the son of Julius Hammer a member and co-founder and organizer of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). Julius was born in Russia but was forced to leave in 1880 because of “Czarist opposition to his socialist views,” as was stated by fellow CPUSA member Benjamin Gitlow. Julius was purportedly a gynecologist and was convicted of performing an illegal abortion and sentenced to Sing Sing. Julius and his wife Rose intentionally named their son “Armand” Hammer to symbolize the logo of the Bolshevik revolution, of which Armand Hammer never changed or repudiated regardless of its meaning.
Julius was a great financial support in its fledgling years, bailing out arrested Communists and donating a building in New York for the unrecognized embassy of the soviet government. Armand was recruited by his father to CPUSA membership at an early age.
At the age of 23 in 1921, the same time frame in which the Temple Block was being mortgaged, Armand Hammer went with his medical degree to the Soviet Union and became close friends with V.I. Lenin and helped his government in furthering their goals. Alexandr Solzhenitsyn described him this way:

There is an alliance between our Communist leaders and your capitalists. The alliance is not new. The ever famous Armand Hammer, who is flourishing here today, laid the basis for this when he made the first exploratory trip into Russia, still in Lenin’s time, in the very first years of the Revolution.... Since that time... we observe continuous and steady support by businessmen of the west of the Soviet Communist leaders. Their clumsy and awkward economy... is continually getting material and technological assistance. And if today the Soviet Union has powerful military and police forces — they are used to crush our movement for freedom in the Soviet Union — we have western capital to thank for this also.

In 1978 Hammer was the first businessman ever to receive the Lenin Order of Friendship, which is an award given by Soviets to foreign Communists. Hammer had a lavish apartment in Moscow and is the only American who could freely fly to, from, and wherever he wished within Soviet air space without escort. Indeed he needed none since he was firmly one of them and is one of a very few that could ever tout duel citizenship in both the United States and Soviet Union.
Hammer was one of the first pardoned by President Bush after he took office, for past improprieties in campaign contributions to Richard Nixon. He has constantly put forth the doctrine that the American and Soviet systems should become more alike as he praised “centralized control of the sources of supply and demand and production as found in socialist societies.” Hammer in his autobiography told of his wife’s desire for him to get rid of his favorite office sofa, because of the numerous trysts he had upon it with other women. He was so proud that he became a self-confessed adulterer.
The gala ceremony was hosted by fellow internationalist, Jon Huntsman, at the Church office building, within sight of the then Church president, Ezra Taft Benson. A defender of free agency and against everything that Armand Hammer had represented for years. Russell M. Nelson even commissioned an artist to sculpt a bust of him with an inscription naming him a great humanitarian and friend of all civilization.
It was stated by journalist Robert Woody in the Salt Lake Tribune on March 25, 1990, “The rapport between Dr. Armand Hammer and Jon M. Huntsman Jr. is understandable.” Subsequent articles at the time and many since have claimed Jon Huntsman to be “protege’” and “heir apparent” to the Hammer legacy. Indeed, Jon Huntsman has shown his power both internationally and locally as when having dropped out of the governor’s race, he just went back and assumed his position as Stake President having previously resigned. He has since served as Regional Representative and is surely in line to be made a new “area leader” as the position of Regional Representative has been eliminated under the new Church president, Gordon B. Hinkley. That his power is one of a quasi-general authority is without doubt, along with the power he wields at the international, national, state and Church levels. We need be eternally vigilant to see the future secret undertakings by this combined element. Why would these men seek to involve themselves with these combinations? Moroni looked to this day and saw clearly and warned these people ominously:

Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing.
And I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and there are none save a few only who do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel, unto envying, and strifes, and malice, and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.
For behold, ye do love money, and your substance, and your fine apparel, and the adorning of your churches, more than ye love the poor and needy, the sick and the afflicted.
O ye pollutions, ye hypocrites, ye teachers, who sell yourselves for that which will canker, why have ye polluted the holy church of God? Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ? Why do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies — because of the praise of the world?
Why do ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the hungry, and the needy, and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to pass by you, and notice them not?
Ye, why do ye build up your secret abominations to get gain, and cause that widows should mourn before the Lord, and also orphans to mourn before the Lord, and also the blood of their fathers and their husbands to cry unto the Lord from the ground, for vengeance upon your heads?
Behold, the sword of vengeance hangeth over you; and the time soon cometh that he avengeth the blood of the saints upon you, for he will not suffer their cries any longer. (Mormon 8:35-41)

They have become as the Jacobins within the Catholic Church. Originally organized as a group of priests of high learning that might teach the gospel in great power, they came to understand that “true” power came not through not through doctrinal teaching but through political power. That more converts could be made through the force of politics as opposed to the still small voice of Spirit. This they did for the “good” of the church. Contrary to the words of Paul:

And some affirm that we say, (whose damnation is just,) Let us do evil that good may come. But this is false. (JST Rom. 3:8)

The teaching, belief or action of those who feel that the end justifies the means is certainly the great liar, Lucifer. But in all the above, you can be sure these actions have been justified at one time or another on that basis. They have become, as it were — Mormon Jacobins.
We have mentioned these very few instances not to challenge the truthfulness of the gospel restored by Joseph Smith. In so doing we have written but little of the very many cases of political and business perversions and little of the doctrinal and spiritual perversions while saying nothing of the moral and occult perversions, (having touched on them in the article reviewing the Bishop Glen L. Pace memorandum in the **** 1993 issue of the Title of Liberty). The gospel is true regardless of the actions of men, even if they are men that have found their way to the top levels of the Church. Is there is any doubt why the Lord has stated emphatically:

Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord.
    And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord;
First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord. (D&C 112:24-26)

And so He says that He will clean His own house, and to this we joyfully submit. Let the Lord do the cleansing and setting in order, but as we seek not to steady the ark, we know that we are our brother’s keeper and that we all are required to raise a warning voice, especially when the good ship Zion is off course. Not in an effort to set it back on course, because we will leave that to the ship’s Master, but that all that have eyes to see and ears to hear may prepare themselves for certain disaster if She keeps the same course or the tight places She may navigate before re-entering clear waters. There may even be a need to abandon ship if only to provide Her with less weight as She traverses shallow waters. Or the possibility that the Master may forfeit Her in un-navigable waters and storms only to outfit later a new and unsinkable ship.
There are many that are searching for truth, and to them we say, “Call upon the Master, for only He will not lead astray.” Know that these men and their actions will have no lasting effects upon the true gospel and those valiant ones that seek the righteous path. For He said:

I give unto you these sayings that you may understand and know how to worship, and know what you worship, that you may come unto the Father in my name, and in due time receive his fulness.
For if you keep my commandments you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; therefore, I say unto you, you shall receive grace for grace.
    And now, verily I say unto you, I was in the beginning with the Father, and am the Firstborn;
And all those who are begotten through me are partakers of the glory of the same, and are the church of the Firstborn.
    Ye were also in the beginning with the Father; that which is Spirit, even the Spirit of truth;

    And truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come;
And whatsoever is more or less than this is the spirit of that wicked one who was a liar from the beginning. (D&C 93:19-25)

With truth, with knowledge, comes responsibility. A responsibility to obey His revealed commandments, and seek the further truth and knowledge he has promised to all of Adam’s children who are valiant and have been valiant since the pre-mortal existence. To seek His will and follow it in the building up of His Kingdom here in the last days to welcome back all the company of Saints and our Redeemer and King to the earth once again.
Should we concern ourselves with a church that was organized as a terrestrial order, and since fallen even from that glory, when the Celestial order of Zion and the Church of the Firstborn is that for which the true Saints should be seeking? We will continue to concern ourselves with this superflidity until we have discovered that we cannot rely on the arm of flesh but must only rely on the Source of all Truth.
Some, however, having had their eyes opened to much truth concerning this one arm of flesh will only eventually seek out another arm of flesh in whom to take comfort, and the last disposition will only be worse than the first:

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
Then he saith, I will return to my house from when I came out; and when he has come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. (Matt. 12:43-45)

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. (Proverbs 26:11)

If you are not prepared to stand on your own two feet do not seek this avenue and become as those whom Lehi saw in his vision of the tree of life, once having started toward this tree, when the midst of darkness arose, got lost in strange roads and forbidden paths. That there are false prophets in the Church as prophesied by Jeremiah, Micah and others, is true. But that there are false prophets along many paths carrying us away from that great and spacious building also brings about a need for even greater vigilance. The adversary cares not what untruth you may finally grasp, but only cares that it is untruth. Those whom the Spirit has whispered truth and knowledge to must be wary for the adversary has that much greater desire to lead in forbidden paths to destroy the great work that the Spirit has thus far accomplished. These are those that are far more dangerous to his plans than any others, and much greater efforts will be made to divert their forward progress. It pains this author to have seen many led to these strange and forbidden paths, only to be lost to the Lord’s work forever.
There are many false prophets of groups out there who teach such evil practices as glorified wife swapping, reincarnation, abortion, drunkenness, etc. All with the effort to appeal to the desires of the flesh while legitimizing these practices before the Lord that the conscience may be at peace. We have seen many good families and individuals destroyed by those that care not for the salvation of others but only for their own glorification. Their wakes that trail after them carry the many shattered lives of those that have been sucked into the vortex of their false teachings. All to fill a supposed void of spirituality.
But if so many false prophets abound, where do we seek for those in which He says:

Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. (Amos 3:7)

To this we reply as Moses:

...would God that all the LORD’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! (Numbers 11:29)

    and reaffirmed by Brigham Young:

Yes, my brethren and sisters her, both men and women, have revelation, and I say with Moses of old — “Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets.” (Discourses of Brigham Young, pg. 41, JD 1:242)

And it was Paul who taught: “For ye may all prophesy...” and, “...covet to prophesy...” (1 Cor. 14:31, 39)

Through Joseph Smith, the Lord says:

But that every man may speak in the name of God the Lord, even the Savior of the world; (D&C 1:20)

And John the Revelator heard from the lips of an angel:

The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy. (Rev 19:10)

Is it not much better to be a prophet one’s self than to put one’s faith in the arm of flesh for our eternal salvation and the word of Truth that we each, being righteous, have the right to ourselves? George Q. Cannon stated:

...draw nearer unto the Father and live so that we shall receive revelation from Him for ourselves, that the knowledge of the Spirit shall be in our hearts, that the voice of the true Shepherd will be known to our ears, that when we hear it we will know it, that we cannot be deceived or led astray. This is the privilege of the Latter-day Saints, and the men and women in this Church who does not live so as to enjoy this privilege comes short of being what he should be. It is these blessings that compensate for the falsehoods, for the contumely and for the persecution to which the Latter-day Saints are subjected. If it were not for these gifts and blessings of peace, quietude, union and love, such as cannot be obtained elsewhere, with those other gifts to which I have alluded — having these in our possession we can look calmly upon the efforts of the wicked. We can, without being afflicted in our souls, receive the persecution which they may seem fit to heap upon us; to have our names cast out as evil, to be accused of all manner of wickedness and crime. We can submit to these things cheerfully, knowing that the day will come when these lies shall be swept away; when the will of the Father and the glorious light of truth will shine upon us, and we shall be vindicated in the sight of the inhabitants of the earth, in the sight of heaven and angels. This being our condition, we can rejoice under these circumstances, and look forth to the time when we shall receive the happiness and reward alluded to. Brethren and sisters, live so that each of you can go to the Father and ask and receive from him the blessing that you need. He has said, “Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm.” Do not build upon man. Do not lean upon him, but lean upon our Father in heaven. Seek unto Him; implore His blessing; ask for light and strength from Him; humble yourselves before him, and confess your sins; be of a broken heart and contrite spirit, and He will visit you with His Spirit, and bestow upon you gifts such as you have never yet received. (JD 19:110-111)

To this scripture he must have been thinking:

I also will chose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.
Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:
That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.
For thus saith the Lord, Behold I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.
As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.
For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord will be many. (Isaiah 66: 4-5 & 10-16)

That this is where we are at today, those who have sought diligently can surely tell. Only the establishment of Zion, whirlwind, and the return of the Lord is yet to come with true justice being meted out. So ye need not be fearful what men can do to you for they can only destroy the flesh.

And fear not them who are able to kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both body and soul in hell. (JST Matt. 10:25)

To this we concur and commit ourselves with the Psalmist when he said:

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. (Psalms 56:4)

We must instead seek, as George Q. Canon said above, His will, His Spirit and His blessings, to bring about His strange work in this day, for the Lord said:

And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift and power of the Holy Ghost; and if they endure unto the end they shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting kingdom of the Lamb; and whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon the mountains shall they be. (1 Nephi 13:37)

Let us not be captive to the flesh for of these we have right to be free — free to choose liberty and eternal like over those who would seek to enslave us to the arm of flesh and dictates of men:

Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to chose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. (2 Nephi 2:27)

The question — to be miserable like unto the adversary and his men of flesh or — to have eternal life and liberty of truth through He who can never lead astray? To this we leave fully to you with the admonition of Brigham Young compared to the words of others you hear in this day:

I would like to impress upon the minds of the brethren, that he who goes forth in the name of the Lord, trusting in Him with all his heart, will never want for wisdom to answer any question that is asked him, or to give any counsel that may be required to lead the people in the way of life and salvation, and he will never be confounded worlds without end; while he who trusts in the wisdom of man, or leans on the arm of flesh, is weak and blind, and destitute of the principles that will lead the Elders of Israel to victory and glory. Go in the name of the Lord, trust in the name of the Lord, lean upon the Lord, and call upon the Lord fervently and without ceasing...
...live continually so that you may have the Spirit of the Lord with you and the counsel of God within you, that you may be able to give a word of counsel, instruction, and comfort to the disconsolate, to strengthen the weak, and to confirm the wavering, and spend every day of your lives doing good. Unless we take this course it is useless to talk about being Latter-day Saints, the redemption of Zion, or the establishment of the Kingdom of God, for nothing short of the wisdom and power of God and the Holy Ghost will ever enable any people on the face of the earth to redeem Zion, and to establish the kingdom of God in these latter days. (JD 12:34)
